AD CAMPAIGN: BALENCIAGA SPRING/SUMMER 2013 BY STEVEN MEISEL
Posted on January 9, 2013
After becoming fascinated by Versace’s latest advertising campaign I became a bit obsessed with looking through their archive shoots to see if there was any link or reinterpretation of their past campaigns. So imagine my utter shock when I came across this:
It looks like Steven Meisel hit a creative wall as he recycled the concept for his 1993 Atelier Versace campaign for Balenciaga’s Spring/Summer 2013 campaign!
Granted the campaign works in Balenciaga’s favour by beautifully highlighting the striking details and drama of Nicolas Ghesquiere’s final collection, (worn by models, Kremi Otashliyska, Kirstin Kragh Liljegren and Sam Rollinson), through it’s perspective, composition and sharp black and white filter. However Meisel gets zero points for originality, even if it was his own campaign to begin with.
It’s rather cringeworthy to see a two distinctly different brands sport exactly the same campaign despite the 20 year gap. If Meisel had shot this campaign for Versace then I would have seen it as a wonderful throwback tribute to the 90s, but rehashing it for Balenciaga in 2013 is both baffling and shameful.
