AD CAMPAIGN: BALMAIN AUTUMN/WINTER 2012/13 BY DAVID SIMS

Posted on July 26, 2012

Starring Clément Chabernaud & Nadja Bender, check out the new autumn/winter Balmain campaign by David Sims…which although nice, isn’t very “Balmain”…

While I am usually a fan of the simple menswear campaigns from Balmain starring Clément (as their product has never really been as “intricate” as the womenswear), I am not sure these work as well. They are, no doubt beautifully lit and composed shots that have a rather “romantic classicism” element about them, but are they “Balmain” enough? The autumn/winter womenswear deserves something much more intense and rock and roll, this is just too homely and soft and actually takes away from the luxe appeal of the new collection by muted all the glorious colours and pearlescent details.

If this was purely a menswear campaign then I would be sold. Clément has enough of an edge and the masculinity to counter the softness, but unfortunately the same cannot be said for the womenswear. For me it just doesn’t work in relation to the brand and the collection.
