PHOTOGRAPHY: “A DELICATE BALANCE” BY RYAN MCGINLEY, T – THE NEW YORK TIMES STYLE MAGAZINE, WINTER 2012
Posted on November 22, 2012
Usually we’re accustomed to seeing images of model of the moment Karlie Kloss, and just seeing “Karlie Kloss” along with whatever fabulous designer apparel she sports on her designer frame. But A Delicate Balance by Ryan McGinley is somewhat different. My eye is still fixed upon Karlie, but it’s wandering all over the image, from the giant crater nestled between the twin volcanic peaks of Masaya and Nindirí, the edge of which the brave model sits upon on the cover above, to conveying a modern Botticelli’s Venus atop of Lake Nicaragua, with the island of Ometepe in the distance while clad in Balenciaga.
Yes Karlie is breathtakingly gorgeous, but it’s seems she has met her match with the scenery of Nicaragua, or rather, McGinley has captured the perfect balance between a natural beauty and natures beauty.
Check out the beautifully shot editorial, featured in T – The New York Times Style Magazine with Karlie wearing the likes of Gucci, Marc Jacobs and Chloe in the most awe inspiring places.
Breathtaking vistas, beautifully composed and I personally believe Karlie was the only person to pull this off. She has an innocent, and almost child-like quality about her – Like the girl who falls down, scrapes her knee and gets back to climbing the tree.
Ryan McGinley’s photographs are a perfect mix of the clarity found in a National Geographic, and the attitude found in fashion magazines such as Vogue or Dazed or AnOther. We need more of this please!
