PHOTOGRAPHY: SMASH OF THE TITANS BY MARIO SORRENTI

While on the W-Magazine train, here is the accompanying editorial to their August 2012 cover starring the beautiful Charlize Theron and handsome Michael Fassbander.

The sexual chemistry between these two could bring about the end of days. Check out the Mario Sorrenti lensed shoot here. *wipes drool off iMac keyboard*

Now I know I’m the first to call out someone for going a bit cray cray with the retouching (especially on Charlize), but it’s completely justified here and actually works within the context. Once again the apocalyptic/science-fiction themed issue, (largely due to Prometheus, the blockbuster they both star in), is paid tribute to with cold blue and red foreboding lighting, 90s movie poster-eque editing and of course the two”Titans”, fighting the illicit sexual chemistry and a never-ending battle in what can only be described as a steel ladened “Tartarus”.

As with the Fierce Creatures shoot, the styling, courtesy of Edward Enninful is on point. A sexy Charlize looks absolutely stunning in that glorious YSL chain mail dress from the autumn (fall) /winter collection, and in her Agent Provocateur lace corset and Dolce & Gabbana silk bodysuit, while a smouldering and shirtless Michael Fassbender looks rugged and ready to take her (!) in Dsquared2 and Viktor & Rolf Monsieur leather trousers. I mean it was probably too hot in there for a shirt anyway…

What I love about this shoot is the idea of duality, largely represented in the image of Charlize and Michael holding each other whilst suspended from a bar. This antithesis theme that runs through Prometheus, is beautifully exposed by Sorrenti – just like science and religion, reason and emotion and of course the heart and the head, all of which have one thing in common…Eternal conflict.
